Composition Courses at WKMT

INTRODUCTION

Any musical journey is full of milestones. It takes time to learn the language and discipline to go all the way.

Embarking in the musical creation process is a fulfilling and fantastic experience and at the same time daunting and challenging. To find our voice as creators can feel almost unreachable at the beginning. These courses aim to guide the students through the process from the first step, helping to find their path by tailoring the learning to fit their musical goals and purposes.

Thanks to WKMT, my team, who helped me create and design such project with all their support. Without WKMT, this would have never been possible.

THE STRATEGY

The strategy offered in these courses is building a progressive plan tailored according to what you specifically need, no matter the style or type of music you want to undertake. The theory should serve to the practice and not vice-versa.

At every step of the way, the learners will acquire the necessary concepts to help in bringing into life their music within.

Regardless of the motivations, they might have at the beginning that can go from a wide range of catalysts that cause this passion and impetus to be able to create something out of thin air; there are stages in the learning process that they should be aware.

HOW THE COURSES ARE STRUCTURED

In order to become a full rounded composer, it is paramount to make the rules that make the music yours.

How?

The early skills to be approached are Music theory, which can be seen as the "Grammar" of the Music. As you study the alphabet and the rules of a language, music works the same way. There are specific "codes" which can be understood as "common practice".

This course also contains the study of Harmony, which is the cornerstone of all music from the last 300 years!

Additionally, you may want to learn how to play instruments. It would be best if you focused mainly on the piano, which can be said, is the primary "composer's tool" so that they can use instrumental aids when composing music, the Keyboard Harmony course covers this area.

The musical Composition course provides the foundational and necessary conceptual and operational tools for the development of compositional work from the first note to the last chord. This syllabus aims to guide the students through a progressive method taking their creations to another level of expertise, providing the necessary structure to your music.

For musicians who are music producers, Dj's or want to explore the world of songwriting, the course of Composition for music producers is ideal to go straight to tools they need for their careers.

The main objective of the Counterpoint course is to develop the ability of structuring elements that organise the musical discourse in terms of linearity. The basics of Counterpoint are appreciated not only in the Music corresponding to the European tradition, where the term was coined, but it can be observed in virtually every musical manifestation.

Finally, the Orchestration course complements the concepts studied in the Composition, Harmony and Counterpoint courses.

The goal is that the student can recognise the timbral characteristics and combinations of the leading orchestral groups, applying advanced and extended techniques of the orchestral instruments.

Also, to organise and structure simple compositions according to the features of the different musical instruments and know the different types of orchestration according to the times and styles at the end of the course.

THE APPROACH IN THREE MODALITIES

Each course goes from beginner to advanced level; this means that the students can take any course individually if they intend to focus in one, or to start from Music Theory and Harmony, then to Counterpoint, Composition and finally, Orchestration.

Also, the most alluring aspect for the students is that there are three modalities of study.

The first or "Self Directed" provides all necessary information to achieve your goals but without any guidance of the instructor. It entails a self-directed experience.

The second or "guided by an instructor through final assessments" has the supervision of the instructor at the end of every module upon the presentation of written works by the student with the proper feedback of the instructor.

The third one, or "one to one lessons" modality will have the instructor guiding the student on every step of the way, accommodating the concepts learned according to the student needs and expectations.

This structure provides immense freedom to everyone that want to undertake their studies.
