Muzio Clementi, pianist and composer

Have you ever played any of the famous Sonatinas by Clementi? Sonatas or studies? Did you hear about Gradus and Parnassum?

Here I bring a new post analysing the life and career of one of the greatest composers of the history of music. This time, we talk about Muzio Clementi (1752-1832).

Pianist, composer, pedagogue and conductor among some of his great skills and works. Clementi, started as a young talent playing the harpsichord back in Italy. He was once seen by one of the members of Beckford family, a wealthy English family, who got impressed by the young talent and decided to take him to England and pay for his studies until the age of 21. His musical adventure started when he was 14 years old, in Dorset, England. Studying for around eight hours a day, playing for the family and friends in events and parties as well as composing.

These years were crucial for the young Clementi to settle his knowledge and talent on the music. Once he reached 21, he got free, and he decided to still remain in England, however, he moved to London. Once of the most prolific cities for musicians like him with plenty of opportunities and chances to become something greater.

Once settled in London, he started playing in several music rooms, churches and concerts. Also, he travelled along Europe giving recitals too. This time was when he reached the fame in Europe as a performer with either harpsichord and organ. The same time when a young Mozart starts reaching the fame too.

After some time, he continued with his compositional ideas. Got inspired by the London of that while, combined with his italian heritage, he composed Symphonies, Sonatas, Sonatinas and piano concerto. He completed a piano book with studies called Gradus and Parnassum, one of the most famous works of Clementi which nowadays still is used when learning piano.

He also worked as piano tutor and conducting some concertos.

As you can imagine, these were truly musicians. The passion and commitment for it made them the genius of the music touching with success and kept for the etternity.
